U17 2015-2016

Under 17s Match Report

Johnstown 1-0 Kingscourt

This was always going to be a big day for Johnstown u17 as they were being presented with the league cup for winning the league.

The match started off with Johnstown putting pressure on from the start. Early chances falling to mark Rafferty and Clayton O’Sullivan but for a few great saves from the Kingscourt goalie Johnstown would’ve been ahead. As half time drew near Johnstown increased the pressure driven forward by John Farrell in midfield.

For the second half Johnstown introduced Aidan Regan up front and were rewarded midway through the second half with a cooly taken goal by Aidan Regan. Rafferty again came close with a great header supplied by Oisin McGuinness which was tipped over and a shot from Oisin smith which hit the post.

At the final whistle the game ended 1-0 to Johnstown. To Kingscourts credit the game was played very fairly and at a good tempo. There was a number of good preformance on Johnstown ( Rafferty,Regan,Farrell,Dineen)

5 Star Johnstown Rout Boca Rovers

Johnstown 5  – Boca Rovers 0

A polished display by Johnstown saw them rout Boca Rovers 5-0 at the MDL on Sunday morning, thanks largely to 5 goals from top scorer Arnold Ruksenas.

The home side were eager to put defeat to Muirhavnamor in their last outing 3 weeks ago behind them and went at the visitors right from the off. Inside the first minute, both Pierce Challanger and Wayne Cahill had opportunities to opening scoring but Boca managed to scramble the ball away.

Johnstown’s quick movement and slick passing soon led to the breakthrough. Cahill took possession in midfield and went on mazy dribble which resulted in him being taken down in the box by the last man when through on goal. A penalty was awarded but the expected red card did not materialise and Boca escaped with their full compliment still on the field. With 4 minutes on the clock, Arnold Ruksenas opened the scoring with a firmly struck penalty beyond the keeper’s reach.

Further chances fell to Adam Ivers and Pierce Challenger throughout the first half but Johnstown had to wait until the 42nd minute before they could make their dominance count.

Again Wayne Cahill’s pace and quick feet were instrumental in the creation of the chance. In possession on the left, Cahill ran into the area, dibbling past a number of defenders. When he reached the goal line he pulled the ball back to the closely marked Ruksenas. Using his strength to hold off his marker, Ruksenas turned and fired in his 30th goal of the season.

2 goals in a minute, on the hour mark, put this game beyond the visitors. Both goals were virtually identical. A deep pass out from the back, set Ruksenas free. His pace left the defenders standing. On both occasions, he was through 1 on 1 and just picked his spot, beating the keeper and stretching Johnstown’s lead.

Just 8 minutes later, Johnstown were awarded a free out wide on the their right. Sean Challenger’s perfect delivery was met by the head of Ruksenas who steered it into the net, completing the rout with his 13th goal in the last 5 games and his 33rd goal of the season, reaching the target he set himself in August, with 4 games to spare.

While the front men have grabbed the spotlight, a word of praise is deserved for the defensive unit today. They worked tirelessly, and handled a very dangerous Boca attack with relative ease and merited their hard earned clean sheet today, their first since October.

Johnstown FC Team: G. Baltinas, J. Colton, J. Connolly, D. McQuillan (c), M. Grumley, A. Ivers, S. Challenger,  J. Flynn, P.Challenger, W. Cahill, A. Ruksenas

Subs:P. Dempsey for Flynn, J. Forde for Colton, D. Grumley for S. Challenger.

Johnstown 15s V Robinstown Match Report

U15s Div 1 Robinstown 2-3 Johnstown

Johnstown made the short trip to Robinstown this weekend and came out on top in this 5 goal thriller.

The away side started brightly and created their first chance of the game inside the first 5 mins, Aaron Chinchilla saw his shot well saved which fell to the feet of McCann whose effort was cleared off the line. The away side threatened again when Chinchilla shot from distance but his effort failed to trouble the keeper.

Robinstown started to get a foothold in the game and this pressure resulted in a number of corners that were well defended. Daniel Murphy was called upon mid way through the half and saved well at the feet of the Robinstown attacker.

The home team were rewarded a penalty after Glenn Sheeran pushed the Robinstown winger as he was running away from goal. Up stepped the Robinstown player who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

This spurred the away team on and they nearly got back onto level terms. Conor Davies found himself in the box but his shot from a tight angle hit the side netting. The away teams next chance was created by Davies who unselfishly squared the ball for McCann whose pass went out of play.

Half time 1-0

The away team got their first goal of the game shortly after the restart. The impressive Chinchilla found Adam O’ Connor whose pin point pass set Darren Finnegan through on goal. Finnegan showed great composure and lifted the ball over the approaching keeper into the back of the net.

Johnstown took the lead for the first time in the match when Breen McCullagh finished from close range after some good play from O’Connor and Dowdall. Johnstown were unlucky not to increase their lead after a very good save from the Robinstown keeper. The home team equalised after a mix up in the Johnstown defence which let  Robinstown in on goal. The attacker rounded the keeper and calmly slotted home.

The last 10 minutes was a very tense affair with both teams looking to grab the winner. Murphy was called upon after he palmed the ball onto the bar after a shot from distance. The away team continued to push for the winner and when it was looking like they would leave with a share of the spoils, they snatched the winner in added time. A quick free kick found the feet of Finnegan whose shot on goal was bundled over the line by captain Adam O’Connor.

Best for Johnstown; A Cummins, A Barrett, A O’Connor, M Dowdall and A Chinchilla.

Team; D Murphy, G Sheeran, C Leonard, A Cummins, A Barrett, A O’Connor, D Finnegan, M Dowdall, C Davies, C McCann, A Chinchilla, Subs; P Gaffney, D Clarke, B McCullagh, M O’Leary, A McGovern, L McKeever, A Barry
