5 Star Johnstown Rout Square

Johnstown 5 Square Utd 1

With 5 different players getting on the score sheet,  Johnstown earned their first win this season’s O’Neill’s Sportswear Division 1 campaign with a 5-1 win over Square Utd at the MDL on Sunday morning.

The home side dominated much of the play in the opening stages, seeing their quick passing and movement just failing to open up the opposition’s defence.

The scoring was opened as the returning Kacper Zeberek used all his strength to hold off a number of defenders as he hooked a bouncing ball in the box passed Jamie Rooney in the Square net. A goal their play deserved.

That goal spurred the visitors into action and they came close to finding an equaliser. Paddy Sheridan broke through the back line but could only fire straight at Keith Mangan in the Johnstown goal.

Within a minute, Lee Fahy had doubled his side’s lead. Zeberek blocked an attempted clearance close in. The ball fell to the Johnstown left winger who calmly lited the ball into the net passed 2 covering defenders.

It was almost 3-0 just before half time as Darren McQuillan rose highest on the 6 yard line to meet a Justin Flynn corner, his header whistling wide of the back post.

Straight after the restart, Johnstown again had a chance to score a 3rd. Lee Fahy, whose direct running caused Square problems all morning, ran through leaving him 1-on-1, Rooney again coming to his side’s rescue.

On the hour mark, Square Utd pulled themselves back into the game. A quick break, and a well timed run saw Andrew Eagan though on goal. With a cool head, he tucked his finish away passed Mangan in the Johnstown goal.

There ensued a period of nervousness from Johnstown after this goal and Square Utd very nearly got back on level terms. A corner was played into the area where it was met by the head of Jake Stewart, directing the ball off the bar and away.

With 20 minutes to go, Jay Connolly strode out of defence with the ball at his feet. He played a short ball into Zeberek’s feet who got a quick shot away that flicked off the outside of the post with keeper scrambling across the goal.

3 goals in the final 10 minutes  put a slight gloss on the score line that was harsh on the visitors.

The first of these came from the foot of Craig Murphy. Having gone close earlier in the game, Murphy made no mistake as he latched onto a fine through ball from his midfield partner, beating Square’s rearguard, before firing the ball passed Rooney into the roof of the net.

With the 2 goal cushion restored, Johnstown became more relaxed and decisive in position. Just 2 minutes later, another direct run by Lee Fahy set up Justin Flynn, who needed 2 bites of the cherry making 4-1, securing the points for his side.

The scoring was not finished there, though. A late substitute, Wayne Cahill added a fifth, his second in 2 games, in injury time. Shane Conroy played the ball on to Zeberek who turned and fed the ball through to Cahill. Through one on one, he made no mistake, completing the rout 5-1.

Reserves Bounce Back to Win

Johnstown reserves continued their good start to the season with a hard fought win in the local derby against Navan Town.   Johnstown did not start the brightest and found it hard to play their natural passing game.  On the half hour mark Navan Town took the lead when a long ball caught out the Johnstown defence.  Never the less Johnstown did not panic and possibly could have been level at the break.

After a few stern words at half time Johnstown came out fighting and really took control of the game.  Playing much better football Johnstown laid siege on the Navan Town goal.  Some good midfield play and excellent work down the left from Ian Cahill made the equaliser inevitable.  It came on the hour mark when the ball fell kindle to Alan Burke to slot home.  Only one team were going to win the game now, however it took till the last few minutes for Johnstown to claim all three points.  Good work on the right from Alan Kerr led to a corner which Morris Mulvany rose high to head goal-wards only for his effort to be handled on the line by a Navan Town defender.  Ian Cahill stepped up and confidently powered home the resulting penalty to secure all 3 points.

1) Keith Mangan. 2) Micheal James( 16, Alan Burke). 3) Jimmy Caffery( 12, Eoin Farrely). 4) Morris Mulvany. 5) Paul Curtin. 6) Ciaran Croke. 7) Alan Kerr. 8) Ian Cahill. 9) Andre Sirb (17, Peter Dempsey). 10) Shane kelly. 11) Wayne Cahill.

Johnstown Concede Late Leveller

Johnstown 1 – Athboy Celtic 1

A late equaliser for Athboy Celtic left Johnstown deflated after a game in which they had controlled possession for the majority of this O’Neills Sportswear Division 1 encounter on Sunday morning.

The opening spell saw Johnstown giving a near master class in retaining possession with their crisp accurate passing, leaving the visitors chasing play all over the park. However, despite seeing most of the ball, Johnstown could not create any clear sights of goal.

In fact their first opportunity came from a direct free kick just outside the area. Lee Fahy hit a shot curling into the bottom corner until the firm hand of the visiting keeper turned it wide.

As the half went on, Athboy grew into the game but were largely restricted to hitting their hosts on the break. Indeed twice late on Stephen Mangan was called on to make sure the half remained scoreless. The first of these happened as Athboy shot directly at him but his second intervention came as he reacted quickly, coming of his line and gathering the ball at the feet of an onrushing forward sending the game into the interval at 0-0.

Shortly after the restart, Arnie Luco and Wayne Cahill played a neat 1-2 on the edge of the Athboy area. The tall Johnstown striker strode into the area. With the angle closing on him all the time, Luco fired his shot wide of the far post when a simple square ball to the better placed and unmarked Fahy would have unlocked the defence.

Less than 2 minutes later, Johnstown had a strong penalty appeal waved away. Wayne Cahill, an early replacement for the unfortunate Adam Ivers, ran directly at the defence. As he entered the box, 2 defenders converged on Cahill simultaneously taking him out on either side. Despite the load shouts the referee waved play on.

Johnstown’s reward came just on the hour mark. Athboy Celtic, on a rare sojourn upfield, earned a corner. Jay Connolly emerged from the Johnstown area with the ball at his feet. He picked out Lee Fahy who raced the length of the field. Spotting the excellent supporting run of Wayne Cahill, Fahy played his teammate in, where Cahill finished comfortably, giving his side the lead their play deserved.

With 13 minutes left on the clock, Cahill had the opportunity to clinch the game for his side as he bore down on goal. Rather than picking out either Luco or Fahy, both unmarked in the centre of goal, Cahill fired his shot across the face of goal and wide.

For the final 10 minutes, Johnstown dropped further and further back surrendering a number of chances to Athboy. Some poor finishing combined with some good goalkeeping perserved Johnstown’s lead but it was not to last.

In the final minute, following another defensive clearance, Athboy pumped the ball back upfield. An excellent first touch and instinctive shot on the turn from just outside the box thundered into the bottom corner of Mangan’s net leaving the sides to share the spoils.

Johnstown Reserves Square Up to the Opposition

Johnstown reserves started their A reserve league campaign away to square Utd in Ardee today. After a good preseason Johnstown wanted to start the season on a positive and showed this with some early pressure. Some very good play created corner after corner with no success how ever did not put Johnstown off. After some good work down the left from Alan Kerr and jack conroy the fell to Andre Sirb who could not capitalise.

The opening goal did come after yet another corner saw Ciaran Croke get on the end of a excellent Justin Flynn cross. Johnstown keeper Keith Mangan was rarely troubled in the first half and the visitors went in a goal to the good.
After a good opening ten minutes of the second half Johnstown concentration seemed to drop and their hosts started to get a foot in the game. Square created a couple of changes but were caught on the break with Wayne Cahill crossing for Shane Kelly to double the lead. Square halved the deficit with a fine individual goal. Johnstown Secure Play-Off After 5 Goal Thriller

Trim Town 2

Johnstown 3

Thanks to a late winner from Rory McGrath, Johnstown secured their passage into the semi finals of the Over 35s league with this 3-2 win against Trim Town on Wednesday evening.

The night started in the worst possible fashion as Trim Town fired themselves in front following a very harsh penalty awarded inside the first 5 minutes.

Despite the set back, Johnstown heads did not drop. During the next 15 minutes,  Johnstown created a number of opportunities that lacked the finishing touch.

Finally they pulled level on 18 minutes as J. Byrne converted the best move of the night. Starting with Trevor Greene in midfield, he played a long pass to Ian Murphy who took the ball into the box.

Seeing Byrne  unmarked in front of goal, Murphy laid the ball across the 6 yard cutting out the Trim keeper and leaving Byrne with the easy task of netting his 4th goal of the campaign.

Johnstown’s joy did not last long as 4 minutes later Pat Hegarty was picking the ball out of his net for the second time of the night. After initially pushing a close range shot on to the bar Hegarty was helpless as Trim reacting the quicker and  nodded the rebound into the net restoring their lead.

Just before the interval, Hegarty came to his side’s rescue. Trim broke well leaving the forward in a one-on-one with the Johnstown netminder. Hegarty remained tall before producing an excellent save to keep the trim lead at just 1 goal.

The second half saw Johnstown almost set up camp at the Trim end but try as they might, they just could not create any real goal scoring chances.

That was until Gavin Merrigan went up for a corner with 16 minutes remaining. Rory McGrath’s corner was cleared to the edge of the box where Merrigan set himself, took a touch, and fired his shot in off the underside of bar levelling the scores once again.

The night of drama was not finished though. In final minute, Rory McGrath took possession in the final third. Having beaten a defender he hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Trim net, securing his side a place in next week play-offs.

Quay Celtic Unlock Johnstown Defence

Johnstown 1 – Quay Celtic 4

Johnstown’s introduction to football at this level was a cruel one. Despite taking the lead, their opponent’s clinical efficiency in front of goal condemned Johnstown to their first league defeat in 12 months as Quay Celtic ran out 4-1 winners in the O’Neill’s Sportswear Division 1 clash at the MDL on Sunday morning.

The visitors from Dundalk started well. A corner early on, required Gintas Baltinas to be alert, called upon on 3 occasions before the danger was finally cleared.

Scoring his 3rd of the season, Arnold Ruksenas opening the scoring on 10 minutes. With Quay Celtic looking to attack, Jamie Connolly stepped in to dispossess his opponent. Two strides later, with his head up, Connolly slid the ball through to Ruksenas who picked his spot and made it 1-0.

It was very nearly 2-0 just minutes later when Lee Fahy was foiled by the visiting keeper.

Midway through the first half, Quay Celtic were level. Their forward timed his run well and race onto the ball before finishing passed Baltinas.

5 minutes later, as Connolly tried to let the ball run out for a goal kick, a Quay Celtic player hooked the ball back into the danger zone, where despite the dive of Baltinas, saw his team mate presented with the easiest of opportunities. He made no mistake and the Dundalk men were 2-1 up.

Johnstown were almost on level terms just on the stroke of half time. Sean Challenger played a superb ball forward to Lee Fahy. With the left winger advancing into the area, he unselfishly squared to Obi Pilane whose shot was saved from point blank range.

The first action of the second half saw Quay Celtic double their advantage. With the ball high upfield on their right, the men from Louth presented their onrushing midfielder with a perfect chance which he dispatched into net from inside the area.

In a 5 minute spell just before the hour mark, Ruksenas had a number of chances to pull one back for his side. The first of these came as he raced on to a Lee Fahy through ball. His left foot shot was tame and comfortably saved.

His next chance came courtesy of a great pass by Jay Colton. This time on his right, Ruksenas could not keep his shot down. Sean Challenger was the provider of Ruksenas’ 3rd opportunity in this spell. Again, however, it fell to his left side. Despite 2 bites at the cherry, Ruksenas just could not convert and the deficit remained 3-1.

As the game entered its final 10 minutes, Johnstown were forced into withdrawing keeper Gintas Baltinas, who’d picked up knock earlier in the game, replacing him with Jimmy Caffery. The stand-in keeper was called upon immediately to deny Quay Celtic as they looked to capitalise on a mix up between Darren McQuillan and Jay Colton.

On 88 minutes, Quay Celtic struck their fourth of the morning. With Johnstown looking for the goal to reignite this game as a contest, Celtic broke forward at pace leaving them one on one against Caffery who had no chance as they made 4 goals to 1.

In the last minute, 2 second half substitutes combined for Johnstown’s final chance of the game. Justin Flynn, using all his strength and skill made it to the by line before pulling the ball back to Dave Grumley. The ball arrived at knee height and Grumley could only fire over under pressure from the defence. And with that squandered opportunity, went Johnstown’s proud undefeated league record stretching back 12 months.

Johnstown FC Team: G. Baltinas, J. Colton, J. Connolly, D. McQuillan (c), J. McDermott, O. Pilane, S. Conroy, C. Murphy, S. Challenger, L. Fahy, A. Ruksenas

Johnstown Leave It Late

Johnstown 2 – Woodview Celtic 1

Johnstown kicked off their 2015-2016 campaign with a well deserved 2-1 win over Premier Division side Woodview Celtic in the Kilmessan Shield at the NEFL complex on Sunday morning.

The visitors from Dundalk started the brighter and took full advantage of their early superiority when they opened the scoring inside 3 minutes. A cross played in from their right was met by the head of their forward who flicked the ball across goal and into the back of net.

Despite this early set back, Johnstown did not let their heads drop. For the remainder of the half, they controlled possession and play but just failed to find that spark in the final third to create any danger for the visiting keeper.

The chances Johnstown’s play deserved started to come in the second half. First, Arnold Ruksenas took possession in midfield and ran directly at the visiting defence.  As covering defenders were sucked across towards the man on the ball, it left space on the far side. Ruksenas spotted Mark Grumley in this space and squared the ball to him. Alas, Grumley could not take advantage of the chance as he pulled his shot wide of goal.

On the hour, after another strong run Ruksenas crossed from the right to Lee Fahy. He shot first time across the goal and wide.

As the half went on, the hosts began to turn the screw, increasing pressure on the Woodview goal.

Immediately after his introduction, Obi Pilane twice found himself on the end of some vigorous defending. On each occasion the referee awarded a free kick. the second of these produced another excellent chance for an equaliser. Jonny Forde whipped the free kick into the far post where Mark Grumley was waiting once again. Unluckily, his stooping header went over the bar.

With 9 minutes left, the equaliser Johnstown so desperately sought finally came. Craig Murphy, played a measured through ball to Fahy on the right. He squared to the unmarked Ruksenas who tapped it in at the back post.

2 minutes later, Woodview could have retaken the lead. For the first time since their goal, they managed to break through the Johnstown rearguard. Having had little to do all game, Gintas Baltinas in the Johnstown net stayed alert and quickly came out off his line to save with his feet.

The Johnstown keeper then began the move that won the game for the home side. His clearance found Craig Murphy in space in midfield. He moved the ball quickly on to Ruksenas racing clear of the defence. As the keeper came out, Ruksenas picked his spot and buried his 2nd of the day earning victory for his side.

Johnstown FC Team: G. Baltinas, J. Colton, J. Connolly, D. McQuillan (c), J. McDermott, M. Grumley, J. Forde, C. Murphy, S. Challenger, L. Fahy, A. Ruksenas

Under 12s v Kentstown Match Report

Johnstown continued there winning ways from midweek with a tough game against kentstown.

The candy stripes went into an early lead through the pacey Fionn Kennedy who broke fast on the break to hammer home the first.  Rhys Connolly hit the second from inside the box.  After a knock down when Rhys calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.
Kentstown seemed to be on the ropes especially the threat of electric Adam Quinn and Herdy down the left but Kentstown got two quick goals to level 2-2.  This it stayed for most part of the first half with both sides on top form ,Kentstown with their dangerous no 8 and Johnstown with their explosive pace.  Twelve minutes from half time the kentstown box was under attack when they had thought they cleared their lines when a loose ball fell into the path of Walshie who clinically despatched the third.

3-2 it stayed but not without some nervy moments.  When Kentstown attacked in numbers between Troy, Evo, Jacko, Shaun and Adam Johnstown were in good hands and worked well to hold on to our slender lead, Which they did.
Good hard fought win well done lads.
