We had a helping hand from the wider Johnstown community providing some sustenance for the group, thanks to Smiths Supervalu and andysfunfood.com for providing snacks for the group and Dublin bus for the transport.

Days out like this are of huge benefit to the football club and help grow the sense of pride and community within the club. A huge thanks must go out to all parents and coaches that helped out on the day and made it so enjoyable. In particular, a huge debt of gratitude must be paid to John O’Brien who organised the day out from its inception.

Everyone had a very enjoyable day out and here’s to more in the future.

Match Report U13 Girls Johnstown FC V Torro United FC

Saturday’s match was the 3rd official league match. This match was a great team performance. Johnstown had a 2-0 lead going into the 2nd half

For the match, Johnstown lost the toss and was forced to play up the hill for the first half. Two minutes in, Ava scored a great shot from deep on the right side of the pitch.  Only a minute later Ava was unlucky to see another shot go just wide. Siobhán battled on the right side early on and won a few throws in quick succession, gaining valuable ground.  About six minutes in Caoimhe had the first of what would be many throw-ins today. A huge throw from near halfway started another Johnstown attack, finding Aoibha who in turn made a clever pass to Ava whose shot went just wide.

Torro responded but was repelled just inside the Johnstown half by clearances from Darinn and from Abbie who tracked back well to provide the required cover. Hanna had several dribbling runs and was rewarded with a goal to make it 2-0 at around the 20 minute mark. Soon after this Kelli came on for Jessie. Caoimhe’s throws from deep in the opposition half added another dimension to the Johnstown attack and were landing deep inside the box. At around 25 minutes a loose ball in the middle looked like it needed commitment and power but was instead skilfully pulled back and redirected by Aoibha to a team-mate. Kelli had some good play in the closing minutes of the half, at one point managing to trap the ball shield well from Torro players and then make a good pass. The last attack of the half was a Torro corner. Kelli picked up the loose Torro striker at the top of the box and was first to the crossed ball, seeing off the danger.

Early in second half Méabh was called on to save a shot from the right side of the box. About 3 minutes into the half Torro had a great shot from far out using the full height of the goals to make the score 2-1.  Chloe came on and showed some good footwork on the ball. The teams battled hard throughout the second half. Torro equalised at 23 minutes and Johnstown looked like they could see this one slipping away but they regrouped striving for a higher level and found it. Torro were put under intense pressure and at about 25 minutes Ava’s remarkable long distance goal made the day. Final score Johnstown 3-2 Torro. This is the third league victory in a row well done girls!

U13 Girls V Carrick Rovers 7th April 2018

This was the first competitive match for the team using the full size FIFA One pitch at the MDL.  Any concerns that this pitch would be too big for the 13s were soon set aside.  From a Johnstown tip off Hanna had an early shot saved by the Carrick keeper.  Soon after Ava sent in a shot that just went wide.  Teagan had a few well directed early throw-ins which lead to a Johnstown attack helping to keep the pressure in the Carrick half.

Vital interception and clearance just inside the Johnstown half by Abbie helped launch one of many early attacks. Aoibha scored a great goal after about 5 minutes to make the score 1-0.

The attack resulting from the Carrick tip off was cleared by Abbie again and soon the ball was back in the Carrick end with Hannah getting a 2nd goal for Johnstown.  Kellie did some great battling in mid-field winning most challenges and an important free which was taken by Caoimhe to keep the pressure on.  A goal kick from Méabh was volleyed forward by Teagan eventually finding it’s way to Hannah who’s shot was denied by the excellent Carrick keeper.

Aoibhha made an excellent run with the ball from midfield beating one defender and was very unlucky not to score. Chloe battled hard on the left side of midfield making an important contribution. Siobhán came on for Chloe a few minutes before half time and got straight into the action.

In the closing minutes of the half, a Carrick corner was solidly defended and was converted into an attacking opportunity. Another strike from Hannah was saved just before half time.

In the second half, Chloe restarted in place of Kellie who had to depart.  The defence continued to keep a good line throughout the half. Caoimhe was very dependable and made several clearances.  From her mid-field position Aoibha also worked hard in defence and at one point made a vital diagonal run back to the box to clear the ball and eliminate the danger that would have been inevitable.

With 5 minutes to go, after several unlucky attempts, Hanna and Jessie’s partnership up front paid off. An excellent cross from left of the goal into Jessie’s path allowed Jessie to slot that ball past the keeper making the final score 3-0.

Under 13 Girls Match Report

After a bad month of March wweather-wise the under 13 Girls finally got their season underway.  We travelled to Monasterboice to face Albion Rovers.

Johnstown quickly got into their stride, attacking the home team from the first whistle.  It took some heroic saves from the Albion ‘keeper to keep the sides level in the opening 15 minutes.  Eventually, the dead lock was broke when Hannah O Brien got through their defence and finished calmly. It was no less than Johnstown deserved for all the hard work they were putting in. Aoibha Grumley added a second not long after with a great strike from just outside the area.  2-0 Johnstown at half time.

The second half started much the same as Johnstown went on attack after attack. Hannah got her second of the afternoon before Albion pulled one back.  The game was real high tempo at this stage with Albion trying to get back into it when Hannah got her third. This was added to soon after by a super finish by Jessie Devoy-Horan to make it 5-1.  A great strike from Aoibha found its way through the unfortunate ‘keepers legs to round of a great day for Johnstown.  A great team performance, where each of the girls really played their socks off.

Final score 6-1 to Johnstown.
