Johnstown 1 – Quay Celtic 4
Johnstown’s introduction to football at this level was a cruel one. Despite taking the lead, their opponent’s clinical efficiency in front of goal condemned Johnstown to their first league defeat in 12 months as Quay Celtic ran out 4-1 winners in the O’Neill’s Sportswear Division 1 clash at the MDL on Sunday morning.
The visitors from Dundalk started well. A corner early on, required Gintas Baltinas to be alert, called upon on 3 occasions before the danger was finally cleared.
Scoring his 3rd of the season, Arnold Ruksenas opening the scoring on 10 minutes. With Quay Celtic looking to attack, Jamie Connolly stepped in to dispossess his opponent. Two strides later, with his head up, Connolly slid the ball through to Ruksenas who picked his spot and made it 1-0.
It was very nearly 2-0 just minutes later when Lee Fahy was foiled by the visiting keeper.
Midway through the first half, Quay Celtic were level. Their forward timed his run well and race onto the ball before finishing passed Baltinas.
5 minutes later, as Connolly tried to let the ball run out for a goal kick, a Quay Celtic player hooked the ball back into the danger zone, where despite the dive of Baltinas, saw his team mate presented with the easiest of opportunities. He made no mistake and the Dundalk men were 2-1 up.
Johnstown were almost on level terms just on the stroke of half time. Sean Challenger played a superb ball forward to Lee Fahy. With the left winger advancing into the area, he unselfishly squared to Obi Pilane whose shot was saved from point blank range.
The first action of the second half saw Quay Celtic double their advantage. With the ball high upfield on their right, the men from Louth presented their onrushing midfielder with a perfect chance which he dispatched into net from inside the area.
In a 5 minute spell just before the hour mark, Ruksenas had a number of chances to pull one back for his side. The first of these came as he raced on to a Lee Fahy through ball. His left foot shot was tame and comfortably saved.
His next chance came courtesy of a great pass by Jay Colton. This time on his right, Ruksenas could not keep his shot down. Sean Challenger was the provider of Ruksenas’ 3rd opportunity in this spell. Again, however, it fell to his left side. Despite 2 bites at the cherry, Ruksenas just could not convert and the deficit remained 3-1.
As the game entered its final 10 minutes, Johnstown were forced into withdrawing keeper Gintas Baltinas, who’d picked up knock earlier in the game, replacing him with Jimmy Caffery. The stand-in keeper was called upon immediately to deny Quay Celtic as they looked to capitalise on a mix up between Darren McQuillan and Jay Colton.
On 88 minutes, Quay Celtic struck their fourth of the morning. With Johnstown looking for the goal to reignite this game as a contest, Celtic broke forward at pace leaving them one on one against Caffery who had no chance as they made 4 goals to 1.
In the last minute, 2 second half substitutes combined for Johnstown’s final chance of the game. Justin Flynn, using all his strength and skill made it to the by line before pulling the ball back to Dave Grumley. The ball arrived at knee height and Grumley could only fire over under pressure from the defence. And with that squandered opportunity, went Johnstown’s proud undefeated league record stretching back 12 months.

Johnstown 2 – Woodview Celtic 1
Johnstown kicked off their 2015-2016 campaign with a well deserved 2-1 win over Premier Division side Woodview Celtic in the Kilmessan Shield at the NEFL complex on Sunday morning.
The visitors from Dundalk started the brighter and took full advantage of their early superiority when they opened the scoring inside 3 minutes. A cross played in from their right was met by the head of their forward who flicked the ball across goal and into the back of net.
Despite this early set back, Johnstown did not let their heads drop. For the remainder of the half, they controlled possession and play but just failed to find that spark in the final third to create any danger for the visiting keeper.
The chances Johnstown’s play deserved started to come in the second half. First, Arnold Ruksenas took possession in midfield and ran directly at the visiting defence. As covering defenders were sucked across towards the man on the ball, it left space on the far side. Ruksenas spotted Mark Grumley in this space and squared the ball to him. Alas, Grumley could not take advantage of the chance as he pulled his shot wide of goal.
On the hour, after another strong run Ruksenas crossed from the right to Lee Fahy. He shot first time across the goal and wide.
As the half went on, the hosts began to turn the screw, increasing pressure on the Woodview goal.
Immediately after his introduction, Obi Pilane twice found himself on the end of some vigorous defending. On each occasion the referee awarded a free kick. the second of these produced another excellent chance for an equaliser. Jonny Forde whipped the free kick into the far post where Mark Grumley was waiting once again. Unluckily, his stooping header went over the bar.
With 9 minutes left, the equaliser Johnstown so desperately sought finally came. Craig Murphy, played a measured through ball to Fahy on the right. He squared to the unmarked Ruksenas who tapped it in at the back post.
2 minutes later, Woodview could have retaken the lead. For the first time since their goal, they managed to break through the Johnstown rearguard. Having had little to do all game, Gintas Baltinas in the Johnstown net stayed alert and quickly came out off his line to save with his feet.
The Johnstown keeper then began the move that won the game for the home side. His clearance found Craig Murphy in space in midfield. He moved the ball quickly on to Ruksenas racing clear of the defence. As the keeper came out, Ruksenas picked his spot and buried his 2nd of the day earning victory for his side.

Wanderers Slain by Johnstown 2-1
Having suffered their only reverse of the season so far in the reverse of this fixture, Johnstown were more than determined to exact their revenge on the visitors from Slane. Thanks to first half goals from J. Byrne and Peter Dempsey, Preston’s charges did just that.
Johnstown laid siege to the Slane goal in the opening minutes and the breakthrough was not long in coming. After just 3 minutes, a superb tackle on the Slane right winger saw Marius Tekorius win possession in midfield. He passed to Peter Dempsey, who quickly played in J. Byrne, leaving him with a simple 1 on 1 chance. Byrne took his time before firing home his 3rd of the season.
The lead did not last long however, as, before the clock reached double digits, the visitors were level. A free kick was awarded wide on their left, level with the edge of area. It was struck firmly but curling straight into the arms of Pat Hegarty in the Johnstown net, until the unfortunate intervention of a defender’s head diverted past the helpless Hegarty.
Johnstown should have regained their lead shortly after. Barry Halpin, broke from midfield and played a perfectly weighted ball to J. Byrne. He hit a low cross almost instantly to the far post where his strike partner Dempsey was waiting. On this occasion, Johnstown’s top scorer could not keep his shot down and it passed safely over the bar.
On 25 minutes, Johnstown had an even better chance to go back in front. Shane Sheridan played a ball to J. Byrne who took it into the area where he was upended and the referee pointed to the spot. Immediately, Sheridan took the responsibility of taking the spot kick. To his and Johnstown’s dismay, he could only watch on as the Slane custodian picking the correct side and saved the spot kick.
In injury time at the end of the first half, Johnstown got themselves back in front. The visitors had a free in their attacking third, which was headed straight at Hegarty who showed great awareness to quickly clear up field. The ball found its way to Tekorius on the left. He moved it on to J. Byrne who found Dempsey unmarked in the area with time to pick his spot, scoring his 10th goal of the season, 8 coming in the league.
Although the visitors had their fair share of possession, they struggled to create much by way of threat to the Johnstown goal, while Johnstown regularly looked like increasing their lead. This pattern continued throughout the 2nd half.
A tenacious tackle by Tekorius was the catalyst for the next Johnstown attack. He knocked the ball into Dempsey before continuing his run, sucking a couple of defenders out from the centre. As the space opened, Dempsey hit a shot curling low into bottom corner before the strong hand of the Slane keeper pushed the ball away.
With the game entering its final quarter, Dempsey won possession high up field. As he raced through, the keeper advanced off his line. With Tekorius unmarked and better placed, Dempsey opted to chip the keeper. Alas, he stood tall and comfortably saved Dempsey’s effort.
Less than a minute later, Dempsey was in almost the exact same situation. On this occasion he crossed to Tekorius, who, despite an excellent first touch, could only blast over the bar.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Peter Dempsey’s night took a turn for the worse. Having been booked earlier in the night, he said just one too many things to the referee who issued him his 2nd yellow reducing Johnstown to 10 men.
The final 10 minutes saw Johnstown beginning to rue their missed chances as Slane made their numerical advantage count. Following some neat play in midfield, Wanderers were through, bearing down on Hegarty’s goal. They looked favourites to level the game, until captain Dave Grumley executed a perfectly timed tackle in the area removing the danger.
If that was not enough to get the hearts beating a little faster, there was more drama to come. Deep in injury time, with Johnstown searching for their critical 3rd, James Kennedy showed great strength on the goal line getting into the Slane area. His shot from a very tight angle, looped high towards the back post where Darren Conway was waiting. With the goal at his mercy, Conway’s header came back off the bar.
The visitors’ immediately cleared up field. As they advanced, they got through the hosts’ rearguard. Although a spectator for much of the night, Hegarty remained alert and quickly came off his line narrowing the attackers’ angle. There was a sharp intake of breath on the Johnstown line as he was chipped, the ball dropping into the net, until the timely intervention of right back Barry Sanfey, executing a last gasp goal line clearance preserving Johnstown’s narrow lead and another 3 points for Garry Preston’s men.
Johnstown 2 – Trim Town 2
Top of the table Johnstown welcomed unbeaten Trim Town to the NEFL complex on Wednesday night. An evenly matched game saw the teams share the spoils in an exciting Group B clash.
Having lost their unbeaten start to the season last week, Johnstown were keen to get back to winning ways and a bright start saw them almost take the lead in the opening 5 minutes.
James Kennedy, impressive in midfield throughout the game, played an excellent ball toward Marius Tekorius but it was knocked out for a corner. Ian Murphy took the set piece, crossing to the far post where it was met by Dave Grumley whose goal bound header was cleared off the line.
The action was not all one way traffic however, as soon after this chance the visitors created their own opportunity to opening the scoring. A perfectly weighted ball in from their left was met on the half volley and needed the alert Pat Hegarty to steer it low around the post.
The deadlock was broken just after the quarter hour. Ciaran Tansey found Tekorius inside the area. His quick feet and awareness allowed him to play in Josh Byrne. He took one touch to set himself before picking his spot and curling his first of the season into net.
This lead was to be short lived however. A quick throw by Trim on their right, caught Johnstown sleeping. The visitors delivered a cross to the far post where it was finished easily, leaving Hegarty with little chance.
The second half began with 2 goals in 2 minutes. First the visitors took the lead following a tricky run, leaving 2 Johnstown defenders on the ground before rolling the ball into the net.
Immediately after this set-back, Johnstown were on the attack. A heavy tackle on Murphy in the Trim area saw muted appeals for a penalty, but the referee awarded a corner instead. Once again, Murphy played it to the back post. A Johnstown head played back across the goal where it dropped invitingly for Tansey who hammered the equaliser into the roof of the net.
Johnstown could have retaken the lead about five minutes later. A long pass by Barry Sanfey was flicked on by Murphy. Shane Sheridan raced on to the ball, but his shot saved well by the Trim keeper.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Trim Town become increasingly dangerous in their attacking third. A deflected shot fell nicely for their forward, who found himself 1 on 1 with Hegarty. He looked favourite to score, until the Johnstown keeper saved with his feet.
Hegarty’s night was not finished there. In Injury time, a headed clearance fell short of safety. A Trim midfielder met the dropping ball sweetly. The first time volley was destined for the top corner, until Hegarty once again came to his side’s rescue, getting a strong hand up to the ball diverting the danger and preserving a hard earned point for Johnstown.
Johnstown FC Team: P. Hegarty, B. Sanfey, D. Grumley, J. O’Brien, C. Tansey, S. Sheridan, A. Burke, M. Tekorius, J. Kennedy, J. Byrne, I. Murphy.

A stellar performance from Johnstown saw 6 different players find the net in this 9 goal midweek romp as they completed a league double over local rivals Navan Cosmos.
The tone was set for the night ahead, when in the very first minute Johnstown went close to opening the scoring courtesy of a Peter Dempsey free-kick that went narrowly wide. Just minutes later, Rory McGrath played Marius Tekorius in on goal. Tekorius’ touch took him round the keeper but too close to the goal line where he could not get his shot on target.
The goal the hosts had been threatening in the opening stages came on 9 minutes. A deep corner by Rory McGrath, was met at the far stick by the head of captain Dave Grumley, as he comfortably opened the scoring making it 1-0 to Johnstown.
Johnstown had to wait until the half hour mark to double their lead. McGrath picked out left winger Tekorius who took the ball in his stride and advanced into the area. As the keeper came out, Tekorius found J. Byrne with his back to goal and under pressure from the defence. Some quick thinking by the forward, saw him finish the move with a cheeky back heel scoring his second of the season.
More than a hint of controversy followed 5 minutes later. As Peter Dempsey raced through and rounded the keeper, the referee adjudged the visiting custodian to have handled outside the area. Although Dempsey put the ball into the net, the official had awarded a free kick and left himself with no option but to reduce Cosmos to 10 men.
Having seen his goal struck from the record, Dempsey was not letting anyone else take the resulting free kick on the edge of the D. His effort in the opening minute, proved to be a perfect sighter, as he dispatched a perfectly placed shot in off the underside of the bar putting Johnstown 3 to the good.
Dempsey’s half was not finished there as 2 quick fire goals, ably assisted by Tekorius, in the final minute of the half saw him complete his hat-trick in an astonishing 7 minutes!
Johnstown’s 5-0 half time lead soon became 6 just after the restart. McGrath, pulling the strings from central midfield all evening, found the perfectly timed run of Tekorius. The winger, who’d played the role of provider for much of the game, was through one on one. He took his time, picked his spot and finished easily passed the stand-in keeper.
Next to add their name to the score sheet was Dave McElroy. Grumley noticed McElroy’s run from deep and played a pinpoint pass up the right midfielder as he ran clear of the defence. McElroy made no mistake and blasted in Johnstown’s 7th of the night.
McElroy, a source of boundless energy since his introduction, showed good strength and fast feet delivering a cross to the back post. Darren Conway rose highest but saw his goal bound header cleared by the hand of a Cosmos defender. The referee pointed to the spot and perhaps knowing Johnstown had the game won, he chose not to send a second Cosmos player to the showers early. The penalty was duly converted by the impressive McGrath, getting the goal his performance deserved.
Later in the half, Dempsey again found himself in acres of space in the Cosmos area. Showing the cold blooded streak evident in all good strikers, he picked his spot and finished his 4th of the night, Johnstown’s 9th, completing the rout.
